Katharine Bryce

Upon receiving the report, High Commissar Pernus ordered the immediate quarantine of Red Reach and the deployment of a full investigative task force. The official inquiry would continue for nearly twenty years, becoming one of the largest internal investigations in the history of the Aurean Subsector.
Commissar Bryce never publicly discussed what she had found beneath Red Reach. Though repeatedly commended for her diligence and discretion, she would refuse every promotion offered afterward. She remained in service for another three decades before disappearing from public records entirely.

Thanatos Tempesti

The testimony of Thanatos Tempesti proved instrumental during the Red Reach Inquiry. His firsthand accounts of the deployments, the disappearances and the conditions beneath Red Reach helped investigators reconstruct decades of concealed military operations. In recognition of his service, and after a formal review of the circumstances surrounding his desertion, the charges against him were dismissed and his rank restored.
He accepted a position within the Chagothian training corps, where he spent the remainder of his military career instructing new generations of soldiers. Recruits remembered him as a harsh and demanding instructor who tolerated neither excuses nor complacency.
By the time of his retirement, hundred of thousands of guardsmen had passed through his training grounds, none knew the full story of the old instructor who taught them to fight and survive.

Adept LIV

Adept 01001100 01101001 01100001 01101110 01101110 01100001 00100000 00110100. Maniple MCCXII, from L series, unit IV became one of the principal authorities overseeing the Red Reach's hidden infrastructure and proved invaluable in securing the site and integrating its technologies into Mechanicus custody.
Over the following decades, LIV rose steadily through the ranks of the local Mechanicus administration, eventually assuming command of the Adeptus Mechanicus presence on Chagoth Primus
In the years that followed, five former members of the Chagothian ruling council were arrested under Mechanicus authority and transferred to Red Reach. None were ever seen again. Official records merely state that they were selected for "cognitive reassignment in service to the Omnissiah."
Several years later, five new techno-organic processors entered service within the complex.
Adept LIV never commented on the coincidence, but found it statistically amusing.

Titanya

Anya never fully understood the political consequences of Red Reach. She remained attached to Commissar Bryce for many years afterward, accompanying her on assignments across dozens of worlds. Witnesses repeatedly reported seeing a gigantic ogryn with a perfect denture carrying luggage, cooking supplies and occasionally wounded people through active warzones.
When Commissar Bryce eventually disappeared from Imperial records, Anya vanished with her. The only known mention of her appears in a routine medical record concerning the delivery of a child.

Aegor Nowak

Aegor survived as he always intended to.
The collapse of the whole Pixie Dust distribution network created opportunities that only a man like him could exploit. Within a decade he controlled a significant portion of Chagoth's underworld economy, even becoming a well known political figure, but he never involved himself in narcotics trafficking. Whether out of caution, wisdom or guilt remains unknown.
He would die of sepsis when his artificial kidneys failed at the age of 452 terran years

Priz Asagri

Always under Aegor`s orders, the “cosmic witch” worked as a bodyguard and enforcer for many years until her sudden demise, caused by a catastrophic warp backlash while attempting a psychic feat that witnesses would later describe as "unnecessary”.
By this moment, she had managed to avoid imprisonment, execution, daemonic possession, bankruptcy and at least three separate assassination attempts. By all reasonable standards and according to her own words this constituted a successful career.

Liutenant Miles

A small number of survivors recovered from the deepest tunnel networks of Red Reach were eventually extracted during early sanctioned operations severely malnourished, psychologically fractured and bearing extensive exposure trauma. After extensive medical and psychological treatment under Imperial supervision, those who retained basic cognitive function were quietly reintegrated into the Astra Militarum training academies, where their experience proved highly valuable for future subterranean and containment warfare doctrine.

Jarsus Stulton

Former Commissar Jarsus Mortimer Stulton was imprisoned while the Red Reach Inquiry took place. After twenty years of investigation, the whole judgment and the final verdict lasted less than twelve minutes. He was found guilty on every charge.
It was acknowledged that his actions had prevented the immediate collapse of Chagoth and it was also concluded that no practical alternative had existed by the time he assumed command. Neither of those considerations altered the sentence. On the day of his execution by hanging, Stulton declined legal advice, religious counsel and the opportunity to make a final statement.
Witnesses reported that he appeared relieved.

Doctor Nikia Bast

Pressured by circumstances, Doctor Bast left Chagoth and eventually settled on a remote world near the borders of Imperial space, where she put her medical skills to work as a respected back-alley physician. Far from the scrutiny of Imperial authorities, she neutered the rescued cub and raised it in secrecy, naming her Raheebah.
Contrary to every prediction, Raheebah did not grow into a mindless beast. She learned language slowly, displayed empathy, curiosity and kindness, and matured much like any other child. When Doctor Bast died in an industrial accident many years later, the local orphanage took Raheebah in, inscribing her as an “undetermined species”.
In time, she became one of its caretakers and eventually its co-director, dedicating her life to protect her children by any means necessary.

After Commissar Bryce delivered her report, High Command conducted a thorough investigation into every aspect of the Planetary affair. The inquiry lasted several years and reached levels of Imperial authority far beyond planet Chagoth itself. In the end, neither Bryce nor her companions passed judgement upon Commissar Stulton. That burden fell instead upon the Imperium he had spent his life serving.

The so called “Red Reach Inquiry” was conducted entirely behind closed doors. Its findings were distributed only among the highest levels of the High Commissariat, the Administratum and the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Following the inquiry, a Mechanicus expeditionary force invoked the authority of the Treaty of Mars and assumed control of all facilities, records and biological assets connected to Red Reach. Imperial authorities on the planet, lacking any real force, offered no resistance. Within weeks, access to the mining complex was restricted, the flow of the compound P1-10 for the Pixie-Dust drug was sealed and entire archives disappeared behind Mechanicus sanctions.

The first riots began four days later.

Hive workers abandoned manufactorums. Entire districts descended into violence as millions of addicts suddenly found themselves without access to the substance on which their lives had come to depend. The Imperial authorities responded with curfews first, then martial law and then mass executions to no avail.

However, Commissar Stulton had anticipated the crisis years before. In what many imperial remembrancers would later describe as his final act of governance, he had ordered vast quantities of food, medical supplies and equipment to be stockpiled within the now-empty barracks and depots once occupied by the Imperial Guard and guarded by a non-military force of Famularian sisters.

Hungry Chagothians soon gathered in their millions outside recruitment offices, where Imperial officials offered regular meals, shelter and a steady wage in exchange for military service. What had begun as a planetary catastrophe gradually transformed into a vast reservoir of manpower. Through a mixture of desperation and sacrifice, a looming civil collapse was converted into one of the largest recruitment drives in the history of the planet. In the following years, Chagoth Primus would provide ten times the number of soldiers originally promised to the Venisae Crusade. Entire generations would disappear into off-world wars before ever reaching adulthood.

Billions of ordinary Chagothians unable to serve perished during the years that followed as famine, disease and civil unrest claimed far more lives than the riots themselves before the Imperium finally began repaying the tithes in the form of food shipments and emergency supplies. Entire districts vanished, countless settlements were abandoned and generations grew up knowing little but hunger.

And yet, the catastrophe Stulton had feared never fully materialized. Chagoth Primus endured, battered, famished and drained, but it endured. And by the standards that truly mattered to the Imperium, the planet emerged from the crisis not weakened, but more useful than ever before.

SCENE 37

The guards at the entrance of the communications tower reacted immediately when Bryce stepped onto the rusty bridge. Rifle lights converged on the group through the industrial fog while one of the soldiers raised a hand for them to stop.

“Halt. Identification.”

Bryce did not slow her pace while showing her crozius imperialis badge.

-Commissar Bryce. Prefectus Command`s High Commissariat authority. Open the gate.-

The guards exchanged uncertain glances. One activated a vox transmitter while another kept her heavy lasgun aimed directly at Thanatos. The former guardsman stared back at them with visible contempt, finger resting near the trigger of his weapon.

Several long seconds passed before static burst from the vox unit.

“Authority confirmed. Allow entry.”

The reinforced blast doors slowly opened behind the guards with a deep metallic groan. Warm air spilled outward not carrying the overwhelming sweet scent of refined P1-10.

The interior of the communications tower was smaller than Bryce expected. Narrow corridors surrounded an ancient cogitator core while flickering monitors displayed refinery output, atmospheric reports and troop deployment records connected to Red Reach. Servitors moved silently between terminals carrying stacks of data slates through the dim emergency lighting. Unlike the abandoned military sectors outside, everything here remained functional.

At the center of the chamber sat an old man behind a metal command desk covered in reports and illuminated tactical projections.

Thanatos immediately recognized Planetary Commissar Stulton, but the man before them looked nothing like the monster he had imagined. Old augmetics covered one side of Stulton’s face. Exhaustion hollowed his features and his uniform hung loosely from a thin frame, but his eyes remained sharp.

Commissar Bryce stood in front of Stulton’s command desk and looked directly at him.

-By authority of the Imperial Commissariat and under the jurisdiction of the High Commissariat of Subsector Aurean, Jarsus Stulton, acting Planetary Commissar General, you stand accused of the following crimes:

-Continued non-payment of the Imperial planetary tithe of troops
-Diversion and unlawful deployment of Imperial Guard regiments, planetary defense forces and penal assets into undeclared containment operations.
-Illegal militarization of industrial sectors outside Administratum oversight.
-Gross negligence resulting in the deaths of approximately two point eight million Imperial personnel
-Falsification and destruction of military casualty records on a planetary scale.
-Unauthorized xeno-biological explotation and refinement operations beneath Red Reach.
-Unauthorized production and planetary distribution of psychoactive compounds derived from xeno biological material.
-Concealment of large-scale xeno infestation activity from Imperial authorities.

The chamber remained completely silent except for the distant vibrations of the mining machinery beneath the tower.

-And finally… Conduct unbecoming of a Commissar of the Imperium of Man.-

Commisar Bryce watched Stulton closely, waiting for anger, excuses or denial. None came. The old commissar simply remained on his feet beneath the dim light, staring silently at the young commissar and her retinue in front of him. Bryce insisted.

-You are accused of the disappearance of almost three million soldiers and creating the Pixie Dust drug. You stole those reinforcements to the Venisae Crusade, created the addiction, the distribution networks, the trafficking and everything that followed.-

Stulton remained silent for several seconds until he finally answered with a steely but tired voice.

-No. Pixie Dust already existed before I took command of Chagoth Primus.-

Thanatos narrowed his eyes.

-Convenient excuse!- he spitted, but Stulton ignored him.

-The previous Commissar General already knew of the properties of P1-10 long before the containment war escalated. At first it circulated only through mining crews and lower hive workers. Small quantities. Recreational use.-

His gaze drifted toward the glowing refinery statistics surrounding the chamber.
-Then Planetary productivity increased. Violence decreased. Recruitment quotas stabilized. Entire manufactorum districts became dependent on it within a few years.-

Bryce crossed her arms.
-And he profited from it.-

For the first time, visible disgust crossed Stulton’s face.
-Yes.-

The room fell quiet except for the endless mechanical vibrations beneath the tower.

-He diverted military resources into private distribution channels while workers starved above ground. Entire stockpiles disappeared into noble houses and criminal intermediaries.- Stulton’s voice remained calm, but exhaustion weighed beneath every word. -When I uncovered the scale of the corruption, I executed him.

Thanatos stared at him.
-And then you took his place.

-I inherited his catastrophe, soldier.- corrected Stulton quietly.

Bryce stepped closer to the desk.
-You could have shut Red Reach down.-

-No. I could not-

He nodded to a dark corner of the room, and a tech adept came into light. It activated several hololithic displays around the chamber. Economic projections, food distribution records and civil unrest reports illuminated the tower in reddish light.

-By the time I assumed command, Chagoth depended entirely on Pixie Dust. Hive productivity had reorganized itself around stimulant consumption. Food transport schedules, labor cycles, manufactorum quotas, even military recruitment efficiency.- His expression darkened slightly.-

Adept LIV processed the data displayed on the screens and turned her oculenses towards Commissar Bryce.
-Ref 1- Displayed data confirms current planetary dependency levels close to the 89,323%
╙►Adenda 1- Total societal destabilization estimated within eleven standard days.

-Then the xeno colonies expanded- continued Stulton -The pheromones attracted more of them toward Red Reach. More colonies required more containment forces. More containment forces produced more casualties. More casualties increased reproductive activity-

Thanatos accused him again
-So you kept feeding regiments into the tunnels-

-Yes.

Doctor Bast tightened her grip around the newborn creature wrapped against her chest.
-You sacrificed three million soldiers to preserve a narcotic economy-

Stulton slowly shook his head.
-No. I sacrificed three million soldiers to prevent planetary collapse, famine and civil war-

Bryce stared at him in disbelief.
-That is not a defense-

The old commissar looked suddenly older beneath the red lights.

-I know-

SCENE 36
The corridors beneath Red Reach narrowed the deeper the group descended. At first they still resembled maintenance tunnels from an old mining complex, with rusted hazard signs, leaking pipes and thick bundles of cables running along the walls. But soon the structure became stranger. The passageways were too reinforced for ventilation shafts and too cramped for industrial transport routes. Heavy vibrations pulsed beneath the metal floor plates while distant machinery groaned somewhere far below them. Emergency lumens flashed overhead in slow intervals, staining the corridors of rusty red before plunging them back into darkness.

Doctor Bast carried the newborn xeno wrapped carefully against her chest while Thanatos advanced ahead with his lasgun raised. The creature occasionally emitted weak screeching cries that echoed through the tunnels.
When LIV forced open another sealed blast partition, the smell beyond the gate changed immediately. The air became warm and damp, saturated with the same sweet scent they had associated with Pixie Dust since arriving on Chagoth.
-The Airborne pheromone concentrations are increasing- stated Doctor Bast looking at her scan. Atmospheric contamination consistent with refined P1-10.

A turn in the corridor leads to a series of narrow openings in the walls allowing the team a look in the colossal underground chamber in front of the facility, swallowed almost entirely by darkness. Rows of collapsed defensive barricades crossed the floor beneath gigantic support columns while burned heavy bolter emplacements and abandoned ammunition crates remained exactly where they had been left years earlier. millions of lasburn marks covered the walls. Entire trench networks cut through the chamber floor, now filled with dust and scattered bones.

Commissar Bryce took a step away from the shooting hole.
-...How many Imperial personnel died down here?-

The adept processed silently for several seconds.
-Ref 1- Incomplete records estimate attrition levels above 2.8 million Imperial assets derived to this sector along a time span of 5.23 terran years.
-Emperor preserve us…

Bryce noticed that the trenches did not lead toward defensive positions but deeper underground. Bone fragments still filled the channels beneath layers of dust.
Doctor Bast understood first.
-They dragged the bodies downward-
-What for?- Bryce asked.

-Ref 1-Accumulated biomass significantly increased xeno reproductive activity within local colonies.
╙►Consequence 1- The war itself fed the infestation

Far away in the darkness, shrill screeches suddenly echoed through the tunnels. The newborn creature answered instinctively from Bast’s arms, and moments later dozens of distant calls replied from deeper inside the outer gallery complex.
Thanatos immediately raised his rifle.
-Move-
Eventually the group reached at the center of the underground metropolis where a solitary administrative tower stood illuminated beneath a massive cogitator array.
LIV stared toward it.
-Ref 1- Active command authority confirmed
╙►Consequence 1- Jarsus Stulton remains inside.

Five armed guards stood watch outside the entrance wearing Chagothian heavy combat armor and rebreather masks. Unlike the exhausted workers and security personnel above, these men looked disciplined, alert and well supplied. Three of them carried advanced heavy lasguns while the others rested gloved hands near the trigger of a compact melta rifle and a heavy flamer.
Bryce remained silent for several seconds while studying the guards.

1 - Open fire immediately before the guards can spot them.
2 - Use Commissar Bryce’s authority to demand entry into the administrative sector.
3 - Attempt to lure one of the guards away silently and capture him alive for questioning.

SCENE 35
The servitor reacted the instant Doctor Bast lifted the newborn creature from the containment cradle. Red lumens ignited behind its metal skull while surgical appendages unfolded with sharp hydraulic clicks. The machine advanced immediately with its injector arms lowering into position.

Thanatos raised his lasgun, but LIV forced the barrel aside before he could fire. The servitor lunged toward Doctor Bast, but Adept LIV intercepted it, her mechadenddrites wrapping around its limbs while driving a data spike through the glowing port beneath its skull, causing the machine to freeze. Red emergency lights flash in the room.

-Ref 1- The nullification of this servitor was logged in the central command node of the facility
╙►Consequence 1- The system has confirmed our presence.
The reinforced blast gates start to close with a rusty sound when the group quickens through them to leave behind the breeding wing. In the corridor, Thanatos covers the empty and foggy space, moving his gun around each corner before advancing with the rest of the group behind him. The mutant cub in Doctor Bast`s arms emits a high pitch screeching cry.

-Why did you bring that thing?
The woman looks at the armed guardsman as if not understanding the question. -It`s… so little…
Adept LIV looks at the facility map over her field of vision and points to the left.

-Ref 1- The individual is an unknown species of xeno or strand of human mutant.
╙►Consequence 1- Ordo Biologis will be interested in the specimen
Commissar Bryce shrugs -It`s proof, in any case.
Three security guards emerged from the shadows wearing mining gear and rebreather masks. One of them raised a flashlight toward the group while reaching for his rifle. Thanatos fired before the man could speak. The first lasbolt burned through a guard’s throat, the second punched directly through another man’s visor, and Bryce shot the third through the chest as he fumbled for a vox transmitter.

Further ahead, LIV forced open a sealed blast door revealing an abandoned military sector filled with cracked barracks partitions and rows of rusted lockers. Thanatos stopped beside one locker and wiped the grime from its surface, revealing the insignia of the 82nd Chagoth Dragoons.

-I knew soldiers from this regiment he said quietly.
Adept LIV activated a nearby administratum terminal. Lines of corrupted text flickered across the screen: troop transfer authorizations, casualty reports and production quotas marked for Red Reach containment operations.

-He kept sending people here Thanatos muttered.
Additional files surfaced as LIV penetrated deeper into the archive systems. Repeated references to P1-10 refinement and biological yield reports appeared throughout every sector of the database.
Then LIV disconnected from the terminal and turned slowly toward Bryce.

-Ref 1- Central administrative systems remain active under Planetary Commissariat authority designation Jarsus Stulton. By his command, P1-10 refinement and export operations have never ceased.

They moved on. Here and there, a blissfully ignorant servitor injected a stimulant, adjusted a drip line, or scraped waste from a swollen thigh with the careful precision of a butcher maintaining his knives. The females were equally oblivious to the group and to their own existence, suspended in a dense haze of syntheopioids that dulled awareness down to pure biological continuation.

Suddenly, one of the broodmothers shifted at the edge of the nearest row. She was larger than the others, her ribs visible beneath stretched skin, her abdomen so distended it seemed impossible her spine had not snapped. She tried to move, but the harness held her upright and the restraints bit into her abused body. A tube filled her mouth, forcing her jaw open, and the only sound she could make was a wet choking breath. Still she fought, trembling so hard the feeding lines shook, until at last she managed to raise one arm.

It was not a flail, but a gesture.

Her twitching clawed hand extended toward the close center of the chamber, trembling under the strain, and her nails scraped weakly against the metal brace with a sound so small that it didn´t matter amidst the cacophony of the plant. Her eyes locked onto the figure of commissar Bryce and in them there was a silent plea that cut through the dense fog of hallucinogens so naked it felt like violence.
There, isolated from the main flow sat a rust and filth covered cage in the same manner as the rest of the pieces of this hellish compound.

Inside lay a single newborn mutant cub, white as the rest of the breeders, unconnected, fragile and still blind. Its little chest rose and fell in shallow, stuttering breaths. It was not screaming yet, not awake enough to understand the world it had been born into, but its tiny fingers flexed once, reflexive, searching for warmth that did not exist.
The mother’s eyes widened further, and Bryce swore she saw tears pooling at the corners despite the filth and the chemical mist. The female tried to pull her arm farther, tried to reach across the impossible distance, but her restraints cut her short. The hand fell and the mist returned to her eyes, her breath in ragged wet gulps, adding her part to the macabre chorus.

Adept LIV stood rigid, optics flickering as the system fed her endless data. Thanatos lifted his weapon, but did not fire. Doctor Bast took a step forward and then froze looking at the commissar, and, the fragile boundary between observation and intervention. The servitor drew closer. Its tools adjusted angle. A syringe extended with a soft hiss, priming itself.

Bryce felt the moment stretching thin. That was the worst part. Not the gore, not the revolting stench, not the oblivious servitors but the certainty that this chamber was not designed for cruelty as an act of hate, but as a routine. Somewhere beyond the walls, the rest of the facility kept working, indifferent... but for what?

Then the machinery noticed the cradle.

A processing servitor on the central rail paused mid-cycle. Its head turned with a dry mechanical click, smooth and calm, like a clerk acknowledging a new file. A rune flickered on its chassis. Its tool-arms unfolded, slender and precise, ending in syringes, clamps, and cutting implements too dirty to belong near anything alive. SCENE 34
The sabotage began the way all irreversible things begin: with small, deliberate deviations administered under the precise instructions of Adept LIV, her mechadendrites buried in the room’s cogitator. Nothing happened at first, but then the system responded with a dry mechanical sound: capacitors burned and consoles flashed red as servomotors screeched to a halt.
-Ref 1- The spirits of the machines curse this violation.
As if summoned by the mech-adept, the door slid aside and a spider-like servitor entered the room. Its occuloglobes rotated and fixed on the surprised group as it moved in without acknowledging them further. Hunched and heavy, its pale skin was stretched between blackened maintenance plates. It plugged into the sabotaged panel with a wet click and began running a diagnostic routine, while its limbs started correcting the damage, slowly reversing the sabotage as if rejecting the very concept of interruption. Tanathos lifted his weapon, targeting the fixxer servitor’s head.
-Ref 1- This servitor is linked to the inner sphere of this place
╙►Consequence 1- Destruction would trigger a response
LIV connected to the servitor’s mainframe while it was occupied; her left eye began to twitch. After a couple of minutes, the servitor went limp and collapsed to the floor.
-Ref 1- The instructions and recordings of this unit have been migrated to my memory log.
╙►Addenda 1- The inner log reveals an emission of binary code to an inconclusive location within this facility.
╙►Addenda 2- It contains clearance level Alpha for all areas of this installation.
Bryce understood immediately that they were no longer hidden. She pointed at the huge plated door.
-Open it.

The locks released with a deep grinding sound that felt disturbingly organic. The seam widened, and warm air spilled out, carrying a smell too sweet to be natural: rot that had not yet become death, mixed with ammonia, milk, and blood.
Beyond the door was not a room. It was a production line made of flesh.
The light cut in, and the chamber seemed to stare back. Row after row of bloated rat-mutant bodies hung in harnesses like obscene fruit on iron trellises, stripped of fur and dignity. Their limbs were bound at fixed angles so tightly their muscles could not even spasm freely. Their bellies were distended beyond anatomy, stretched until the skin turned translucent in places, revealing pulsing veins and slow internal movement that was not digestion but forced gestation. Tubes ran into their throats, their abdomens, puncture sites that should have killed them but instead kept them alive. Their mouths were held open by metal gags, and feeding lines throbbed with a steady rhythm, pumping nourishment like fuel into an engine. The air was thick with heat and moisture, every surface glistening as if the chamber itself sweated alongside its prisoners.

The sound was worse than the sight. It was not screaming, as drugged and subdued as they were they could not scream. It was breathing… hundreds of tiny mutants clinging to the swollen and bloodied nipples of the breeding mothers, their mouths sucking corrupted milk dense with a mephitic chemical stench, unwilling and unable to stop. Their throats layered together in ragged, wet rhythms, punctuated by silenced whimpers that died in the tubing. It was the faint clatter of restraints shifting, the soft slap of flesh against harness padding, and the constant drip of fluids into drainage channels.
Servitors moved between the rows on ceiling rails and floor tracks with their thin multi-limbs like arthropods and their instruments polished by use. They did not hurry, as nothing here required urgency.

One of them, in an agonizing need of maintenance, leaned over one of the white brood-mothers as newborns spilled onto a metal tray in a wet, almost continuous stream of biological production. With cold mechanical precision, it examined each infant as it arrived, routing most into an enormous grinding unit in the center of the room that swallowed them, reducing their forms instantly into a brown paste. Only one was set aside and placed among the writhing mass of feeding infants, where she bit and latched onto a nipple.

The servitor moved on without distinction or sentiment, stopping at another containment bay where dozens of human child-sized cubs were restrained in staggered rows and force-fed a brown paste. It stood motionless for a fraction of a cycle before shutting down the feeding circuit of two of them. A heavy stun discharge dropped them into partial paralysis, and the servitor dragged both onto the adjacent processing rail with mechanical efficiency.

There, four different models of medic-servitors with integrated blades and extraction tools opened the lower abdominal and pelvic areas in a single guided sequence designed for access rather than preservation. Internal structures were exposed and immediately indexed by secondary sensors, which located a paired glandular structure. Micro-clamps isolated and severed them extracting them with a wet, suctioning sound in a clean mechanical motion. The opened bodies were then unceremoniously deposited back into the central grinding unit, which swallowed them whole, finally silencing their whimpers and reducing them into slurry for reintegration into the system’s endless, indifferent production loop. The glands were left on the conveyor belt, disappearing through a slot in the thick wall toward the processing room.

Adept LIV projected the data onto the retinal display of her occulobe as discrete operational statements:

Commissar Bast emptied her stomach onto the muddied floor as she had never done in her life before, her body trying—and failing—to expel even the memory of the scene before her. She lifted her head, gagging for air, then retched again, harsher this time. Her entire frame convulsed as she braced a hand against the wall and clutched at Thanatos, gripping his armor with both hands as if it were the only solid thing left. The filters of his military-grade mask swallowed the stench, and the dark visor muted the worst of what lay beyond the door.

The story text:
Fine mechadendrites unfold from beneath Adept LIV`s cloak, sneaking past Commissar Bryce and crawling along the walls toward the exposed control cluster in the duct above the room. Her probes slip into the housing. Runes flicker faintly across her lenses. One by one, the panel lights switch off.

The workers pause. One tilts their helmeted head, checking a gauge. Another adjusts a valve. The fans lurch, then grind to a halt. Steam hisses and fills the room, no longer being sucked out. Visibility drops. A warning chime sounds below, muted but unmistakable.
The workers stiffen. One steps back from the vats. Another reaches for a wall console.
-Boss! The suckers `re furthed again!-

In response, the conveyor belts slow, then stop entirely. A low beeping begins to pulse, the flickering lumens flashing through the haze.
-Ok, lads! Emergency protocol and shit! Get out until Fixer patches the shit again!-

Below, the technicians scatter, coughing, some clutching their masks as visibility collapses. The room empties quickly.
Bryce makes a quick assessment. The workers were unsettled but not alarmed. Whatever has gone wrong, it is routine enough that no sirens have sounded. No lockdowns. No armed response. She grips the edge of the grate, eyes scanning fast.
-This is our call- she whispers.

Bryce signals. The grate is forced open with a muted screech of stressed metal, carefully controlled. One by one, the team drops down.

The processing room is larger up close, industrial and impersonal. The floor is sticky with residue. Layers of dried paste and fresh runoff create a treacherous skin over the metal plating. The boiling pots, now turned off, reek of cooked organs and chemicals. Working tables line the room, fitted with cutting tools and drainage channels leading into floor grates.
Behind them, a reinforced bulkhead marked with faded hazard sigils blocks access to the previous chamber. From beyond it, cattle-like sounds echo faintly through the now-stilled conveyor opening that connects both rooms. Whatever the primary source of the compound is, it lies behind that door.

Ahead, the second conveyor line carrying boxed material disappears through an open archway into the deeper facility, its lights flickering in sequence as it moves.

Perhaps it is worth taking time to disable the vats, jam the conveyor, and rig the room to collapse production permanently before moving on?

The story text:
Bryce turns toward the left duct without hesitation
-This way- she whispers.

The passage tightens almost immediately. The metal walls close in around the bulky carapace armor of Thanatos, making the slow march even harder. The fog here is thicker, clinging to the floor and crawling up their necks as they advance. Every breath feels heavier, and even through the masks, the group starts feeling light-headed. Bast glances at her scanner, frowning.

-The compound concentration is higher here. We are close to the source- she murmurs.
The duct slopes downward, forcing them to crawl on their knees. The thin metal sheets vibrate softly under their weight, especially beneath Thanatos’ armor.

Suddenly, a particular sound cuts through the duct, rising above the constant hum of machinery. From somewhere below them comes the unmistakable sound of a baby crying, abruptly silenced as if cut off halfway through.
The pipe continues several meters ahead. Thick, old fans replace sections of the duct’s metal plating, drawing the whitish fog down into the ventilation system. Bryce crawls to the metal grate and peers below. The smell is overpowering, sweet and rotten at once. A dim lumen flickers inside, casting long, trembling shadows over what appears to be some kind of processing plant.

Humans in sealed plastek suits work along metal tables, moving with mechanical precision. Their gloves and forearms are stained dark as they take pieces of an unidentified organic mass from a conveyor rail emerging from another room. They cut them open and drop the contents into boiling vats, from which thick fog erupts.
What comes out is a greyish paste, clinically weighed, cut, sealed, and transferred into large containers. These slide onto another conveyor belt that disappears into the next room.

No guards are visible, unless some or all of the workers are armed. Bryce raises her fist. The team freezes. Below, the workers continue their routine, unaware. Steam rises in thick pulses, driven back into the ventilation ducts by the fans.
Bryce studies the layout. The grate beneath them could be forced open. A side access hatch sits near the far wall, marked as maintenance only. Above the vats, exposed ventilation controls regulate the room’s pressure and airflow.

Option 1. Drop into the Processing Room
Engage the workers directly, seize control of the facility, and search for information or access points.
Option 2. Bypass the Room
Ignore the workers and move over the fans through the maintenance access toward whatever lies beyond the conveyor system.
Option 3. Sabotage the Ventilation Controls
Have Adept LIV disrupt fog circulation from above, hopefully forcing a shutdown or evacuation.

Dr. Bast pulls the filter from one of the fallen soldier's masks, he had been collecting the foggy substance for weeks, and looks at it under the harsh white light of her portable scanner. She adjusts the focus, brow knitting, eyes narrowing as she leans closer.
-uh-hmmm- she whispers.

With a trembling hand, she scrapes the blackened residue from the filter’s edge into a clear vial, then adds a crude reagent. Nothing. She blinks and adds another. The liquid recoils, contracting on itself.
-uhm?-

Her gaze lifts to meet Commissar Bryce.
-This isn’t mineral, nor industrial. It’s... some biochemical compound- She drops the vial’s contents onto the concrete floor. -It slowly oxidizes and decays when exposed to air, but down here…- She gestures toward the sealed gates where the substance is leaking from -…it’s being generated nonstop. As if something or… “someone” is breathing it, constantly.-
Thanatos clenches his jaw behind the cladded mask of his armor. -A creature?-
Bast shrugs. -Could be-

Adeptvs LIV tilts its head toward the Doctor.
-Ref 1- According to provided data, this facility extracts one of the source materials of the P1-10 compound to be distributed to the diverse manufacturing plants of the “Pixie Dust” agent.
-Ref 2- 96,31% of well-known manufacturing processes generate biochemical toxic products.
╙►Consequence 1- Data is consistent with evidence

-Yeah, but that’s not all…- She expands the scan, the holographic lines twisting like veins in the air. -It follows a pheromonal pattern… but there are missing parts. The protein chains lack key enzymatic elements. It’s not a known artificial product. This… this is organic.-
Her eyes lock on Bryce again, unwavering.

-This is… a byproduct… a “residuum” of something-

Commissar Bryce puffs and scratches the back of her neck.
-In any case, we need to continue and those doors are the only way into the facility.-

The cladded doors groan as Little Sister Titanya strains against them, forcing them open. Inside the small room, there is nothing but a massive sealed pressure gate like the ones on a spaceship hangar with a inoperative console and a grated vent. The smell hits first, heavy, metallic sweetness tangled with decay. A foggy gust curls upward from the grate, making the Ogryness’ curls shiver. Outside, the roar of the horde gets louder, like a distant growing storm.
Titanya kneels behind the vent entrance, her massive hands brushing at the creeping fog in exaggerated, almost helpless gestures.
The ventilation shaft is narrow, barely wide enough for a single human to crouch inside. Thanatos’ flashlight cuts through the haze, bouncing along the twisting metal ducts that disappear into darkness.
Titanya hesitates at the opening, her enormous frame dwarfing the shaft. Bryce glances back.
-We’ll clear it and come back. Wait here, do you understand? I will come back- she says softly, pointing toward the surviving soldiers. -They’re friends and are weak. They need you to protect them.-
Titanya nods. Bryce turns back, gripping the sticky edges of the conduit feeling the dense fog`s smell even through the heavy filter of her mask. Keeping her breathing controlled to avoid inhaling as much of the foul tasting thing as possible, they get in the duct.

A junction opens several meters ahead. Three large ducts converge, each puffing thick, rolling fog, while countless others like the one they are moving through branch off in every direction. Whatever is generating the haze, it is being vented relentlessly through the network in many different points. Bryce clenches his fists, eyes narrowing behind the mask.

Left Duct – A narrower path, fog heavier but quieter. Could lead closer to the source undetected, but risk getting trapped if it narrows further.
Right Duct – Wider and cleaner, easier to move, but faint clanging echoes from deep within suggest patrols. More visibility, more danger.
Straight Ahead – Directly into thickest fog, pulsating with the biochemical compound. Could be closest to the production, but the fog may harm them.

The commissar fixates her emerald eyes on the small man to whose credit, doesn’t flinch a bit.
-As I said, this is First rank Commissar Katharine Bryce speaking under the authority of the Aurean subsector`s High Command!

-I spit on the High Command! I spit on that furth son of a thousand whores of Stulton! And you! -His glacial eyes piercing through Thanatos` very soul- You abandoned us, traitor!

The soldier averts his eyes in response.
-Yes, I did… but I`m not sorry. You should have come with us.-
-I had a duty! We both had a duty towards the 106th of Chagoth! You deserted! You left your brothers and sisters!
His voice trembles a little bit haunted by vivid memories as his eyes begin to wet.
-I saw all of them die one by one trapped and forgotten in this Emperor-forsaken caves! chewed and gnawed like cattle! And the screams… and cries…

The officer turns his head suddenly and looks at Commissar Bryce with steely determination.

-Still, we fought! The whole 106th of Chagoth! Hundreds of men and women, all good soldiers went down to the pits standing over the corpses of their brothers and sisters! Communications were impossible to set, but we kept going on and on. We fought for each corridor and junction. until we run out of supplies and then we kept going on!

The underground atmosphere is oppressive and cold, and far into the darkness, by the other side of the gates, some mutant screeching is clearly heard.

-But they kept coming, wave after wave… by thousands… millions! Their bones were stuck in the tracks tanks, their guts clogged our cannons!
the veteran soldier composes himself for a moment and exhales slowly
-We found a distress signal bouncing through the galleries and we followed it until we reached this place… only a handful of us, where we found some survivors from the previous wave of reinforcements. Trapped as we are now.- The gun drops down and is holstered with a sigh. -None of them are alive now.-

Thanatos looks at the lieutenant -What killed them?
-Time. Is the fog… Don`t you smell it? It carries some stuff that end up making you go nuts if breathed in constantly. Even with the masks on, the filters start to get leaks after some weeks…

Doctor Bast lifts a hand.
-Where does it come from?

A finger slowly points towards the inner bulding of the complex.
-From in there, there is a big vent terminal that spits that shit day and night. We also found a hidden door in an empty room, but it`s shielded and coded.. We sealed the vent, the room and the base the best we could, but it just keeps leaking.

Lieutenant Miles smirks. -We couldn’t get in and we couldn’t go out.. All left for us was dying.

The story text:
The four mechanical limbs of the Mech Adept run over the cogitator console with ease, ignoring the chaos surrounding her as if she was in a stasis field. With ease, her consciousness dives in the binary coding and melts with the spirit machine's.

One at a time, a row of spotlights blast through the darkness from the walls down the rat-mutant horde. As one, they freeze and shout, as if the yellow lights burned them more than the laser fire itself. Finally, as the underground gallery fills with clarity, the mutants scatter back to their holes.

Mech adept LIV blinks with a beeping sound and moves her arms over the keyboard. The heavy double gates begin to close with the same screeching sound until they meet at the center with an echoing “thud!”. Then, they go to sleep and Adept LIV unplugs herself from the cogitator's console.

Commissar Bryce changes the energy cell of her pistol and sheaths her sword back, the blade is pristine, clean of mutated blood and filth thanks to the power field that surrounds it when it gets activated. With a deep breath, she takes a quick look at her heterogeneous retinue, born of need more than time and trust.

Field doctor Bast is attending the flamer soldier, The old imperial helmet and breathing mask are mauled and almost destroyed, but they fulfilled their mission, the soldier, a tall and strong woman with a brush cut is wounded, but alive.

“Little sister” Titanya is covered in scratches and bite marks but all of them look mere flesh wounds. She is sitting in front of the gates petting the corpse of a dead rat-like mutant surprisingly delicately as if it was some kind of lap dog.

And Veteran soldier Thanatos Tempesti… he is looking towards the end of the courtyard, where a thin figure with a destroyed imperial low rank official uniform limps towards them. As he walks through the soldiers, he makes a gesture with his hand and only then they allow themselves to drop to the floor panting. Some of them take off their helmets, but none of them take off their breathing masks, and Commissar Bryce can see their haggard eyes and almost corpse-like faces.

The man walks up to Doctor Bast and kneeling next to her, puts the breathing mask back on the unconscious wounded soldier that she is attending, then she points at Doctor Bast`s own mask and makes a gesture. The small woman puts it on and nods.
-...she will live-

Soldier Tempesti takes off his helmet and puts his heavy rifle on his back-mounted power unit, then he extends his hand towards the officer.
-Sergeant Miles…?-

The thin and gaunt man looks at the hand and stands up. He is shorter and looks weaker and consumed before the heavy armored soldier, but his gaze is proud and intimidating when he stares at Tanathos in the eye. He takes out a old and worn out lasgun and points the man between the eyes, then he answers with a deep and firm voice.
-It`s lieutenant now, traitor.-

The story text:
-This is First rank Commissar Katharine Bryce speaking under the authority of the Aurean subsector`s High Command! Order arms in the name of the Throne!

Nothing moves in the courtyard for a second, and then the first rat-mutant gets into weapons reach. The twin linked heavy lasgun wakes up and shoots, the short blasts causing havoc along the lines of the beasts who don't seem to take it in account. The mass charges towards the gates and hell gets loose.

The team moves sideways, totally ignored now, and crawls away out of the way of the red lights curtain that blocks perfectly the open space of the gate. Soon, the corpses begin to pile up, and the mutants get closer under the improvised cover of the dead bodies.
-Marteen, Ruthius!
Two grenades explode behind the gates clearing a path along the horde. As one, the soldiers focus their shooting on the area, and it widens up.
-Borgh!
A heavy armored figure runs towards the opening, and the heavy flamer in its hands lights up the underground with burning death. The rat mass freezes and scatters around far from the flames and regroups as soon as the blinding light of the petrochemicals fades out. With perfect timing, the tactic walker´s lascannon and the whole squad covers the flamer until its ready to shoot again.

And then… “Click” -Empty!!! They get in.

A huge mutant, covered with black fur jumps through the gap and lands on the flamer´s soldier taking him to the ground while sinking its sharp incisive teeth in the worn out helmet. A single shot penetrates in the red eye of the beast taking its head with it. Tanathos readies his weapon and shoots again to the incoming figures crossing his fire perpendicularly to the platoon, but the numbers start to weight more than fire.

As the mass gets in the complex, Little sister Titanya jumps in front of it shooting the Pacifier and disbands it like bowling pins being hit by a wrecking ball. She receives some friendly fire in the action, but some of it gets blocked by the heavy tank armor plates she´s carrying, and the rest is just ignored.

The same voice, loud and imposing keeps shouting orders from the back of the courtyard, organizing the defense and adapting it to the ever changing tides of war.
-Second line! Advance! First line, recharge!

Anya`s bold and stupid action gives all warriors in the facility a precious second to recharge and shoot down the now divided front. Veteran soldier Tempesti and Commisair Bryce cover the bleeding giantess while she now smashes heads and bodies with her empty gun as if it was a metal club.

Doctor Bast attends the body of the flamer`s soldier while ignoring the grim scene around her
-The damned witch would have been very useful here!

Mechcult LIV is connected to the inner console next to the cladded gate and nods
-Ref1- Mutated beings seem to suffer natural disinclination towards high temperature reactions
╙►Consecuence 1- I do have to agree.

The field doctor raises an eyebrow... Did the mechadept just make some kind of ... joke?

-Ref1- Commissar Byrce. I found some encoding work in the software of the complex.
╙►Consecuence 1- The gates will take longer to activate
╙►Additional information 1- The outer spotlight system is functional.
╙►Additional information 2- The main building inner defense system is functional.

The story text:
“Little sister” Titanya looks at the narrow elevator and puffs loudly. She just can`t understand why her pretty older sister Commissar insists in getting into those dark and crammed spaces when up there, under the sun they can be nice and cozy. Besides, she always gets in trouble when they get down here, and Anya always has to help her sister get out of them… but that means Anya gets to shoot the pacifier, so she guesses it`s an ok price to pay…

The elevator creaks a little bit, but moves smoothly after the Emperor knows how much time without any use as a testament to the knowledge of the mechanicum cult. The gates open and a freezing breeze gets to the group's bones. The doors close dissapearing in the wall as if they were never there.

The corridor advances a few meters and then opens to a small dark mining cave. The cave is elongated, with small size galleries here and there and ends up in a double contention gate with a small flickering yellow-greenish light that pierces the darkness of the underground labyrinth. Some flying insects roam around the shy light bulb.

The air here smells rancid, with rat-like excrements scattered around the floor and gnawed bones that crack under the heavy boots of the group.

Suddenly, a screeching sound reverberates behind them in one of the child-size galleries and echoes in another, and then another…

-Towards the gate in silence! go, go, go!

The group reaches the base of the doors, there is a simple console whose cogitator panel has some missing keys and old blood stains. The smell here is almost unbearable even with the breathing masks on. Mechcult adept LIV connects her implants to the console and it comes to life.

A red flash of light pierces the darkness when one of the rat mutants sticks his head out of one the small tunnels and with a perfect marksmanship, Soldier Thanatos blows it's brains off.

-We need to open that g…!-

The heavy gate starts opening with a rusty echo that even makes some loose rocks vibrate and fall and, in response, the mutants screeching howls start getting louder as all the rat-mutants in the upper level swarm towards the place.

Before the group can rush into the complex, some lights flash to life showing the inside of the facility. Among a yellow-greenish smog, a handful of human-like figures caught by surprise raise their weapons towards the group. Their movements are sluggish but fluid. Two of them start connecting an old twin-linked lascannon and another one starts climbing to a half destroyed combat walker.
A loud, imposing voice sounds beyond the dusty atmosphere in the facility even over the mutant horde growing sounds at their backs.
-Drop your weapons...-

-What to do?

1-Obey and drop the weapons.
2-Attack the figures while they are getting ready.
3-Try to reason.
4-Something else (what?).

Doctor Bast kneels closer to the corpse, still holding the cold, half-metallic hand between her own. The faint static hum intensifies for a moment, like a dying vox trying to catch a signal through a storm.
-Adept CXI…- she whispers softly. -You are not alone. Your duty is fulfilled. Your brothers came for you. Let us carry what you cannot anymore.-

LIV stands rigid beside her, optic implants flickering with streams of data no one else can see.
-Ref 1 – Bio-signature at 0.05% and falling.
╙►Warning – Neural lattice instability increasing.

Doctor Bast swallows and continues, her voice trembling but firm.
-You fought. You endured. Whatever happened here… it was not your failure. Let us understand it. Let us give it meaning.-
The corpse’s remaining augmetics twitch. The white noise sharpens into a thin, almost melodic whine. On LIV’s retinal display, corrupted files begin to unspool like torn parchment in a digital wind.

-It… responds.- LIV murmurs, almost surprised.

-Of course he does,- Bast whispers. -He is afraid to fade without purpose.-

And yet the machine spirit yields.

Broken fragments of memory bleed into LIV’s processors and are projected in flickering hololithic flashes above the corpse: marching columns under red skies… mining domes in the distance… regimental banners of the LX, LXI… and the newly arrived LXII.

For a heartbeat, the static fades to near silence.
Then, unexpectedly, a final surge.
A new data cluster unlocks within LIV’s cortex. Hidden. Isolated. Marked with a simple binary signature.

The corpse’s optics dim completely. The white noise collapses into silence.

LIV inclines her head.

The room feels heavier now. Commissar Bryce straightens, adjusting the newly acquired sword at her belt.
-So. The missing regiments were here. The source of P1-10 is here. And Commissar General Stulton signed the whole deployment.- She exhales slowly. -That’s not coincidence. That’s design.-

Beyond the sealed gate, distant scratching resumes. The swarm has not dispersed.
Thanatos checks the charge pack of one of the newly found rifles and grins beneath his mask.
-We have better toys now. And a hidden lift. I’d call that a miracle.-
LIV projects the map fragment again, the faint outline of the old cargo elevator pulsing softly in red.

The choices now are as follows:
1-The missing troops and the origin point of the P1-10 compound was this mining facility. Use the elevator to go down a level and look for the P1-10 compound.
2-Use the elevator to leave the place and go question Commissar General Jarsus Stulton.
3- Use the newfound equipment to try to clean the rat infested corridor and get back to the battleground, hopefully to recover more hints about what happened there.

The story text:
Commissar Bryce straps a flak vest over her generous chest and ties up an officer`s sword on the belt while looking at the Mech cultist.
-Whispers? What are you talking about?
-You can not hear them. Their cry in machine language is weak… faltering…
-All I can hear is a static noise...

The now armored and heavy figure of LIV crawls between some boxes and gasps for the briefest of moments. The rest of the group heads towards her and find her kneeling down in front of a still shape. The stench of decay floats around the corner where an almost desiccated corpse lies with its back against a rusty box. The remains of a red robe and multiple mechanical augmentations leave little doubt about its nature. Close as they are now, all of the group can hear the faint sound coming from the corpse, like an off signal radio.

-I know him-
-Ref 1- Adept 01000100 01100001 01111000 01110101 01110011 Maniple MCCX, C series, unit XI.
-Ref 2- Missing in action after my forced repurposing as a Techno-Organic-Processor.

The mechanical woman touches the back of the neck of the corpse, and the white noise gets a little bit stronger, and then it goes back to almost zero, weaker than before…

Doctor Bast takes a look at the corpse. It´s wounded and shows bites marks. One of his cybernetic arms is missing and some bare wires hang from the connector.
-Probably he succumbed to the sepsis due to the infection-

Thanatos grunts behind the cladded mask of her combat armor.
-But what was a cogboy and the whole army of the planet doing here in the asshole of Chagoth? Why is all of this equipment here? And what in hell are those rat things?!-

-Command- Trying to access the neurocogitator of CXI to copy the memories stored inside.
-Ref 1- The spirit machine is blocking my routes-

The Commissar looks at the puzzled mech cultist.
-Can`t you just break into it as you did with the other one?

-Negative.
-Ref 1- It is not a regular cogitator.
╙►Additional information: It is a bio-processor connected to the organic self of CXI.
-Ref 2- I can only dialogue with it, but it is not willing.

-Damn it! Why? We need that information!

-Ref 1- The organic life of Adept CXI is over.
╙►Consecuence: The spirit machine of his technological self is fading away.
-Unknown Variable.
╙►Consecuence: Access denied

Soldier Tempesti rises his arms exasperated and shouts at the mech
-Stop that toaster mumbojumbo nonsense and speak clearly! What the furth does all of that mean?!

LIV stays silent for a second looking for words and then turns her red artificial eyes to look at the soldier`s mask.

-It means there is no logical reason CXI`s machine spirit will not commune with me. It is blocked and running out of the signature bio-energy it needs to keep its functionality.

The voice of doctor Bast whispers in the almost complete darkness of the underground storehouse.
-It`s the departing.

-Ref Missing- Term “departing” unknown.

The little doctor kneels before the corpse and holds his hand. The mechanical augmentations inside it whistle as it twitches almost imperceptibly. Thanatos Tempesti looks at the corpse and then back to LIV.
-It`s.. complicated. “The departing” is a battlefield slang term. We... soldiers use it to name the terror of facing your own death after a mortal wound, during the last seconds, when all the pain is gone and all that is left is sorrow and regret.

-Ref Null- That is a mere imperfection of the neuro-biological transmitters. The spirit machine feels nothing. There is no regret, only efficiency, only duty.-

Doctor Bast tooks off her googles and looks at CXI`s motionless bionic limb`s led lights, their shining almost extinct and mutters.
-Even so, he is afraid of dying.-

From behind the combat mask of soldier Tempesti comes out a long and exhasperated puff.
-Furth all! In short. We are trapped down here with only one way out, at the other side of that door there is a fucking swarm of giant rat-mutant-things, and on top of that, that agonizing toaster spirit attached to a rotten half eaten corpse has much of the information we need but it`s too scared of death to talk. Isn`t it?

Mechcult adept LIV turns her head slowly towards the cladded figure of the scion trooper, her optic implants turned into red slits of light.
-Do not mock a machine spirit by comparing it to a biological body, soldier. That`s close to heresy for the machine cult creed.

Doctor Bast looks LIV with her big brown eyes.
-I need you to transmit him my words, adept. I think I can calm him down and confort him so he will talk to us.

-Ref1- Illogical fallacy – Spirit machines do not need “confort”
╙►Consecuence- Action course leading to no results
╙►Alternative course suggested- Break into the CXI`s neurocogitator coded files by force.

LIV looks at commissar Bryce

The door screeches under the combined force of Anya, Commissar Bryce and Thanatos, but the unreleenting force of the numbers slowly pushes it open, one painful inch at a time.
-DAMN IT, PRIEST! GET IT DONE!-

The monochordic tone of LIV`s voice is lost in the cacophony of echoing screams.
-It`s protected by a code.-
╙►-Ref 1- Breaking in the system without the code will take 345 standard milliseconds.-

357 milliseconds later, the door closes down and the locks slam in, severing heads and clawed hands alike. Half a torso still crawls around for some seconds dragging its guts across the floor tiles. After a while everything goes silent with only the heavy breathing of the three soldiers reverberating in the small room. Anya takes one of the rat-like heads and smells it, then makes a disgusted face and drops it to the floor. Commissar Bryce taps one of the metallic arms of LIV.

-Good job, priest.-

The voice of Doctor Bast is heard from the end of the corridor,
-Hey! There are… things in here!-

Indeed. The big room hold shelves and tables covered with boxes of all kind, some of them are just old, dirty cardboard and plastek cubes containing pieces of rusty electronic equipment, alcoholic beverages and some non sanctioned printed material, but among them, there are some metallic containers branded with the winged skull and reference numbers.

-By the iron cladded balls of Manus!- shouts Thanatos taking a green helmet from inside one of the big crates- This is Elite troops military equipment! Why is this here?-

The man starts opening every container around, and a brief smirk crosses his face when he finds a crate full of heavy looking laser rifles.
-Ohhhhh! For furth`s sake, I must have been a very good boy this year!-

LIV caresses an alphanumeric code on top of a red and golden crate with no locks or handles and gasps with her eyes wide open.
-This box came from Solaris System. This is martian coding.- She connects her implants to the opening and the odd looking code shines a bit in the dark room before opening with a hiss and a cloud of disinfectant smelling gas. She tilts her head as she looks inside and for the briefest of time, her face draws the beggining of a smile.
-Gratias tibi. Deux ex machina-

After a few moment to rest, the Mech cultist suddenly looks at a hidden dark spot of the room. She heads towards some piled up rusty crates under the puzzled look of the rest of the crew.

-I… can hear the whispers. They are close.

The story text:
-Scene 24-

The big corridor's drain holes overflow with rats and rat-like mutants, their seemingly endless numbers just contained by the few holes they can crawl out of.

The group runs down into the narrow and dark tunnel LIV was pointing at with a horde of giant rodent-like mutants almost chewing their heels. Anya slows down hesitantly before the tunnel, more concerned about the asphyxiating darkness of the corridor than the screeching sounds behind her. A red flash lights the tunnel as Thanatos shoots beam after beam towards the furry tide. Commissar Bryce grabs the giant hand and smiles.

-Come on, Titanya. It's not that narrow, you see? There is light at the end, and we can get to a bigger place… even closer to the surface.-

The ogress looks down and makes a pouty face. Commissar Bryce tilts her head...

-Well… It's ok if you want to stay here, but then I'll have to go in there by myself… Are you going to leave me all alone with these people…?-

Anya starts walking and steadily increases her speed up to a breathtaking sprint. On her hurry to leave the anguishing place, she closes her eyes just focusing on running, until the heavily armored door at the end of the corridor clangs loudly when her head impacts against it. She falls down and sits while the rest of the team catches up with her. Screeching noises reverberate in their ears, and the sickening stench of rotten meat and acidic stomach juices mixes with an almost-sweet musk from back down the tunnel.

-Anya! Open the door!-

The heavy gate rumbles when the ogress drags it sideways along the rusty rail. The group gets in the half-lighted room with Thanatos stopping just a second to shoot a short burst of laser fire.

-Anya! Get in! Close the door!-

She looks back at the Commissar puzzled…

-I KNOW! I know I told you to open it, but now I need you to close it back-!

A clawed hand get in the closing gap and grabs Anya`s jumpsuit followed by another, and another. A dark head with red shining eyes and putrid smelling breath pushes through it, then a second one, and a third. Slowly, the unstoppable tide fights back and the gate is pushed open inch by inch. Sharp incisors chew the metal with goosebumping noises as Commissar Bryce shoots against the mutants, but they disappear back into the darkness, withdrawing wounded or just being absorbed back into the twirling tide.

Thanatos discards his empty weapon and helps Anya holding the door. It closes a little.

Doctor Bast shouts over the uproar -There is a corridor here! We may escape through it!-

LIV makes a quick scan of the room with her optics senses in her artificial eyeballs.
-Commissar Bryce. There is a cogitator here.-
╙►-Ref 1- It may control the gate.-

Millions of years ago, the liquid core of Chagoth erupted creating a rich deposit of mineral ore, and after millennia of frantic mining activity, one of the biggest caverns was created down C23. Piling up layer after layer of mining machinery like an old and rusty hive city nowadays it would be impossible to tell the different pieces apart.

The air smells acidic and leaves a bitter taste in the tongues of the group as they advance down the old but solid stairs to the bottom of the cavern. They move as sneaky as possible, but with the huge frame of Anya hitting every clanking piece of machinery and kicking every loose screw and bolt it`s almost impossible to hide from whatever may be lurking around. The presence of the huge cannon of the giantess is reassuring, though.

The whispering voice of Thanatos breaks the tense atmosphere apart. -Commissar. We are not alone-

The bright light of the soldier´s gun pierces trough the darkness like a knife but it gets devoured by the ooze-like underground shadows a few meter away. Still, the light gets reflected in dozens of red eyes that scurry away the path of the beam as it dances across the machinery and the…

-...tanks?-

There is no doubt. The outline of a burned out giant battle tank is unmistakable. Looking around, there is rusty equipment and clothing rags scattered around here and there. Some dog tags shine with silvery bright.

Thanatos points the light towards some destroyed metal and wooden boards.
-This looks like the army rear. Those were supplies crates… Those gnawed off bones were probably the quartermaster and logistics personnel who should be doing the...-

Suddenly, LIV turns her head around -Commissar Bryce… I hear something-

-Yeah. Me too… like a screeching noise.-
-Negative. It`s over there… something mechanic. Like a cry out in machine language, but according to the holomap, that tunnel leads to a dead end.-
-Wait… the screeching noise just sto…-

In that moment, as if a piece of the surrounding darkness splits off, a horde of rats starts to pour out from the sewer holes. The group begins to get back when suddenly, a giant black shape jumps on Anya and marks her cranial implant with its sharp teeth. The giantess grabs the black hairy shape and tosses it back to the sewers, but another comes out, and then another, and another… Doctor Bast shouts:
-What in the name of the throne are those things?!-

-Retreat back to the stairs
-Keep moving forward fast!
-Move to the tunnel LIV said.
